For many, Pearl S. Buck is remembered as the first
American woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature,
but more than a great writer, Buck remained a tireless
fighter and advocate for social justice and multicultural
understanding. She had a vision, a vision for a multicultural
America with a true spirit of accepting and appreciating
different cultures and people of different backgrounds.
To this end, Buck challenged the prevailing philosophy
that guided practices of interracial and international
adoption.
Embracing World Cultures, created by a team led by
Dr. Changfu Chang of Millersville University of Pennsylvania,
tells a story of a woman whose love for children transformed
our understanding of adoption and ultimately our understanding
of family, race, culture, and society. The program also
traces changes in society’s views on adoption
and distinct shifts toward cultural understanding and
appreciation.
